Learn how to avoid costly mistakes on your elevator cab Interiors
Avoid costly mistakes when upgrading your elevator cab Interiors
A common mistake made by building owners is thinking anyone can do elevator renovations by hiring an interior designer or architect who does not know the elevator codes. All elevator cab interiors must meet code requirements for design, weight, fire rating on materials, fabrication, and installation.  In addition, most local code authorities and unions require all elevator interior renovations be performed by, or supervised by, a qualified licensed elevator contractor.

Short cuts on elevator interior renovations are not worth the risk
If you choose to do an elevator interior renovation and do not tell the local authorities, or use a company that's not familiar with codes, you may overload your elevator system, expose yourself to liability or have the elevators shut down by the state. In the U.S., many States require a permit prior to starting any cab renovation work. All work performed without proper permits will be removed and the building owner will then be required to file the necessary permits and reinstall approved materials which will essentially double your costs. If you have questions regarding permit requirements we suggest you contact your States elevator code authority or a local elevator service provider for assistance.

What is the average costs of upgrading an elevator interior
Elevator interior upgrades are not cheap. If you want new wall panels, handrails and new ceiling you should budget $10,000 to $15,000 per car.  The cost of the interior will also increase if you want to add new flooring or use expensive materials like marble.
Current national code allows for a 5-percent increase in weight based on the total of the dead weight of the cab plus full capacity of the elevator. The average allowable elevator cab weight increase is usually between 200 to 500 pounds.  This weight increase is very minimal and will limit upgrade options especially if you want to replace laminate panels to glass or remove carpet and add stone. Remember, elevator cab interiors are part of a complex moving system.  The elevator car must level properly and adding weight will require adjustment to rebalance the cab.
